LIVE KILLING ON T.V.

Someone said that someone said that someone said
You loved me.
Is that the truth? Is that for real?
How come I never heard you say so?

They asked me questions about the battle of Thermopolye
And how the Ancient Greeks deployed their troops?
I said what is the point in the Nuclear Age
Of learning facts from Ancient History?
Philosophy I could understand
But why the hell study military tactics?

She switched on the news to see if the war had started yet.
Live killing on T.V. there’s nothing better
To get the blood running through your veins.

I did love him once she thought
But that was before everybody started talking about it.
And before he was conscripted into the army.
On account of the imminent war.

She drew the blinds switched up the sound
And settled down to watch the blood and the bombs and the bullets.

On the seventh day he didn’t rest, he deserted.
Their orders were more than he could swallow or stomach.
I’d rather fight for the enemy than follow those fools
With stripes on their shoulders and medals across their chest.
Then again the enemy are probably even bigger fanatics.
I’ll just have to fight for myself.
Find me a place where hate can’t exist
And bomb every bugger that comes near.

She heard about his desertion, eating a sandwich,
On the 10 o’clock news.
It doesn’t surprise me .It doesn’t surprise me at all.
He always was his own man.Refusing to bend or bow.
Someone said that someone said I loved him once.
But that was a long time ago.
I couldn’t say if it was true or real.
Anyway it’s all over now.
They found him dead in a mountain cave
With a letter pinned to his chest.
They buried his body beneath five feet of snow
And posted his letter in the nearest town.

When the war was over the letter arrived
And she read it with the T.V. off.
Someone said you loved me once
And I’m almost sure you did.
If you ever read this ,know that I’ll wait for you
Somewhere on the other side of love and life.
My spirit will hover ever near you
And calm your fears on the darkest of nights.

She closed her eyes and tried to remember
The colour of his eyes and the taste of his lips.
Before that stupid war ever started.
The next day she switched on the T.V.
To see if the next war had started yet.
Live killing on T.V.There’s nothing better
To get the blood running through your veins
And to make you feel more alive!
BEYOND SENSE AND REASON.

Snow falling on a Summer’s day.
Sunlight shining on a midnight mass.
Cathedral bells ringing while bombs are falling.
Please God explain the mystery to me.

Foreign words echoing in my perplexed ears.
Strange colours flashing at my blinking eyes.
Mysterious music playing at the back of my head.
Please my God explain the message to me.

I don’t remember my mother’s name.
I don’t recall my childhood friends.
I am so far away from yesterday.
I can’t even remember the colour of my lover’s eyes.
Why is Man such a piece of broken glass?

Ashes of truths that have long become old- fashioned
Are scattered on my lover’s bed.
Branches of a thunder-struck tree are strewn in her garden.
And every letter I try to write to her is lies
Before it was ever true.

Surely Life has a meaning.
Surely love has a reason for coming
Stumbling into our lives like a drunken drunk
And breaking every rule that we once tried to respect.

Icicles hanging from a palm tree.
Flames rising from a ten foot wave.
Love lasting in Man’s cold, cold heart.
Are all these things impossible?

I don’t know why God made you   and the Devil made me.
I don’t know why I must sing and you must cry.
There are too many reasons for each and every act
And none of them is the real reason.

Please , sister of my other self
Help me find away of controlling this unholy chaos.
Help me find a way of hanging onto Love and Light,
And all that lies beyond our ever changing Mind.

Like snow falling on a Summer’s day
And sunlight shining on a midnight mass
And bells ringing while bombs are falling.
Explain! O God that may be, your madness
Your mystery, and your incomprehensible promise!
